Repollarding Two Willow Trees in Creech St Michael

Repollarding willow trees in creech st michael

Silva Tree Surgeons were recently contracted to carry out the repollarding of two mature Willow trees in Creech St Michael, Somerset. The project required a skilled team due to the size of the trees, the site’s access limitations, and the need to carefully manage all arising branches and debris. Three groundsmen supported the arborists to ensure the site was kept safe and tidy throughout the work.

Managing Complex Tree Surgery Near Overhead Cables

The job was made more challenging by the presence of BT service lines running close to the trees. Our tree surgeons in Creech St Michael used hand tools to carefully remove the overhanging limbs that were encroaching on the cables. Once the sensitive sections were cleared, we were able to proceed with the repollarding safely and efficiently, removing the remaining branches without risk to property or infrastructure.

Repollarding Cycles for Long-Term Willow Tree Care

Pollarding and repollarding are effective techniques for managing tree size and structure in confined spaces. When carried out correctly and at regular intervals, Willow trees form attractive pollard heads that can become a distinctive landscape feature. However, once new shoots grow too large, they may become heavy and prone to splitting, creating a risk of failure.

For Willow and other fast-growing species, we generally recommend repollarding every 2–3 years. This cycle helps maintain the tree’s safety, appearance, and health, while preventing excessive regrowth that can lead to structural weaknesses.
